In the coming days, Benoît Hamon and Yannick Jadot could formalize their rapprochement. On Wednesday 8th Feburary, in an interview with radio Europe 1, the Green Party (EELV) candidate said that “in 15 days, this issue will be resolved. Or not.” Because with ten weeks until the the first round of voting, time is lacking.
“If we do not manage a joint project by the end of the month, it will not work.” He said last Sunday on the sidelines of a event in Gardanne (Bouches-du-Rhône) against the large biomass power plant in France.
So, for several weeks, the campaign teams of the two candidates multiply the meetings. The last one would date from Tuesday. The idea now is to operate a gathering of convictions and not just a convergence of parties.
“Putting ecology at the heart of political debate”
Credited with 2% of voting intentions , the withdrawal of the candidacy of Yannick Jadot, remains in fact the most likely hypothesis. At the EELV primary, he had said he did not believe in the election of an environmentalist president. His candidacy was to “put ecology at the heart of the political debate”. With a socialist project in line with his own, he could consider this bet as successful.
So, if he renounces in favor of Benoît Hamon, he will be given a place of choice, explains one in the team of the socialist candidate. “It will also its place, a full part dedicated to political ecology in this union,” said a relative of Benoit Hamon to Figaro .
Also, for several days, many elected officials EELV or PS are working towards rapprochement. Deputy Noël Mamère explains, at the microphone of BFMTV, that it is not necessary to make “the fine mouth”.
“We have complained for decades that the left does not understand the ecology. For once one of its own integrates our problem and our project, we must not make the mouthful.
Avoiding a scenario without the left in the second round
Same remark was given by Cécile Duflot, who welcomes the environmental measures of Benoît Hamon.
“Benoît Hamon has embarked on the great turn towards ecology which I called for with my wishes … His risk is the withdrawal into the heart of the socialist apparatus, but throughout his speech on Sunday ( when Benoît Hamon investiture), he managed to hold his line, “she says in the newspaper Liberation .
Remarks she reiterated in the morning of RTLon Thursday. “Debate must take place, convergences exist”
As for Jean-Luc Mélenchon , its alliance before the first round of presidential elections is desirable for the other two candidates, Benoît Hamon and Yannick Jadot. The idea, to create a common program to try to be present in the second round of the presidential and thus avoid a scenario without candidate of the left to the evening of April 22.
