Francois Hollande asked in the Defense Council that “specific measures” be taken to counter possible cyber attacks during the presidential election, announced the Elysee in a statement.
“The President of the Republic has asked that specific measures of vigilance and protection, including in the cyber field, are taken during the electoral campaign and presented to him at the next Council meeting,” declared the French Presidency following a meeting of the Defense Council which took place on the morning of 15 February.
The statement of the Elysium gives no details on the nature or origin of the threats.
At the end of January, Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian warned against the “massive spread of false information” that could be used as a tool of destabilization in the campaign for the presidential election in France. In mid-December, the minister had warned that France could resort to the digital weapon against cyber threats against its interests.
A command of computer operations, under the direct responsibility of the Chief of the Defense Staff, was created in January with a tightly organized staff to supervise 2,600 “digital combatants” by 2019.
“No interference” will be permitted
France “will not accept any interference in its electoral process,” in the form of cyber attacks or dissemination of false information, Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault warned on Wednesday.
In response to a question from MP Olivier Falorni (related to PRG), the head of French diplomacy said: “After what happened in the United States, it is our responsibility to make sure the integrity of our democratic process is fully respected.”
“We will not accept any interference whatsoever in our electoral process, any more from Russia than from any other state. This concerns our Democracy, our sovereignty, our national independence , “he added.
“Next week we will dedicate an exceptional meeting of the Defense Council to reinforce the measures already taken against cyber attacks. The National Security Agency is at the disposal of political parties and candidates to advise them, we will take other measures that we will announce to guarantee the integrity of this election, “he concluded.
